She’s generally known, but not known enough.
There’s the movie, of course. They should bring it back and show it again.
There’s her Diary, of course. Years ago, it was in the curriculum, on the recommended reading list.
She said, “I live in crazy times.”
How did she know us so well?
She read a lot, probably even more than I did, and I read a lot.
What else was there for her to do, locked away in an attic for safety? Read, think, write. Hope, dream.
Her wise Father got her to write down “beautiful sentences” from what she was reading.
Then she wrote her own.
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
“We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same.”
“Although I’m only fourteen, I know quite well what I want. I know who is right and who is wrong. I have my own opinions, my own ideas and principles, and although it may sound snooty pretty much from an adolescent, I feel more of a person than a child. I feel quite independent of anyone.”
“Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.”
Anne Frank is gone, but her words are still here. We need them, now more than ever.
“Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart.”
