A potato farmer checks his cover crop during the winter

Polish Jokes

I’m almost embarrassed to repeat Polish jokes. They belong to the category of mean spirited pick on the defenseless look down on somebody jokes which come in many varieties, and never really quite go out of style.

We had the “blonde jokes,” even though we know that not all blondes are empty headed. We had the Bosnian jokes where Slovenians made fun of their drooling neighbors. And Scottish jokes about hyper-stingy. We had the Southern Jokes, where many southern localities offered up their targets. We had Moron Jokes where we highlighted stupid. And we had Polish jokes, even though we knew that Poland gave us some of the greatest music and tastiest food.

Apparently it makes us feel good to feel superior. If we excuse ourselves with a grain of salt, we still tell the jokes.

Like the one about the Polish Space Program. They said, “We’re going to the sun.” “But won’t you burn up?” “No. We solved that problem. We’re going at night.”

Or:

The war between Europe and Russia ended in a farmer’s field and they decided to draw the border on his property. They asked the Polish farmer, “Which country would you rather belong to, Poland or Russia?”

The farmer said, “Poland.”

They asked, “Why?”

His answer: “Because the winters in Russia are so cold!”

Buh dump bump.
