Sometimes being clever is hard. It takes too much effort.
Sometimes it comes easily. Sometimes too easily, so easily it makes you say things you wish you hadn’t and it’s too late to take them back.
Sometimes it seems you can’t control it. You just can’t help it, even when it needs help.
Like the joke I’ve told too many times before about the Court Jester who made such bad puns that the King said in exasperation, “I’m sick of your puns. One more pun and it’s the noose.”
The Jester said, “No noose is good news,” so they hanged him.
But I digress.
I heard from the kitchen the sound of coffee beans being reduced to the appropriate flakes of choice and said, “Ah, the daily grind!”
I was met with an explanation to allay expectation, something like, “Don’t expect too much, the grounds are largely those left in the bottom of the grinder which have lingered long and lost their integrity.”
I said, unabashedly, “That’s grounds for dismissal.”
And now it’s no longer just about coffee.
