Animals like to play
I like to watch them
Here I am in my spot
looking out the window
two squirrels in the yard
looking fat and bushy cuddly
chasing each other
one drawing back to tease
the other taking the bait
and off they go again
then both together
facing to the left
to see what it is
something big
out of sight
maybe a bird
the squirrels instantly
turn together on cue
race in parallel
across the yard
and up the wall
and a few minutes later
they’re back again
in the yard
and a pretty big bird
comes down to join them
this time the bird’s the one
to run away
somehow flies straight up
the fence to sit on top
and look down
from the safe vantage
and the squirrels
are at it again
sometimes I wish
I could be a squirrel
or a child again
but at least I can watch
and still be a part of it all
