More and more I see it
ethnic restaurants
starting up
in other countries
that never had
seen such food
and ate up
the new experiences
like our friends
who years ago
opened the first Japanese
restaurant in Ljubljana
or the time in Vienna
when we looked for Greek
and the closest we came
was Turkish
and now the Mexican restaurants
just starting to bring
tacos to Germany
or I hesitate to remember
years ago McDonald’s
at the foot of the Spanish Steps
in Rome
so Italians could
eat American
and I remember
all those years ago
our first taste of Thai
on a side street in
the Los Feliz District
of greater L. A.
and even the Mountains of Mongolia
serve more than boiled yak
If only we can hold on
a few years more
as food breaks barriers
and crosses borders
food will unify the world
as we sit down
and digest
each other
together
