Long Room of Trinity College Dublin

Laws are words too

A feature of the last defence
should be putting up not taking down the fence
to keep out cattle pushing to get in
de-fence says to take away
the barrier against any sin
or circumstance; that isn’t what we want to say
when words no longer can
protect us when stuff hits the fan
and laws are words
to save us from ourselves
the herds that trample and drive us to shelves
of books for our protection
arranged to give the right selection
we open to find rhymes of poetree
for easy swallowing
while wallowing
in uncertainty
and blood letting of real blood
shows how much misunderstood
is any real cause
that should make us pause
we struggle haven’t found the words
right strong enough to keep the herds
from rushing in
