She took the bus to Canada
Greyhound from L.A.
heading north
past states and sights
she’d never seen
fellow passengers
on and off
some sleeping
some looking
out the windows
or around at other
passengers who
endured the ride
sometimes patiently
sometimes not
the American Northwest
in transition to the border
when
just after crossing
a crew of uniformed
staff she hadn’t
noticed came forward
and began pushing
carts of cakes and tea
down the aisle
like another world
but civilized
and they explained
to the passengers
“You’re in Canada now”
