That’s a question you should ask yourselves
but apparently haven’t,
not really,
not deeply,
not recently.
You say
We want to raise awareness.
I say
How aware do you want to be?
You don’t answer.
You don’t want to talk about it.
You want to chant.
I’ve never liked the chanting,
the mindless repetition,
cheap easy rhymes,
which say
we don’t want to think about it.
I remember
years ago
demonstrating for a cause
I really believed in
and an unelected chant leader
began the chant
I couldn’t join
Hey Hey
Ho Ho
Blankety Blank
Has got to go
Hey Hey
Ho Ho
What do you hope to achieve?
You’ve blocked the entrance
so I can’t go in.
Are you trying
to alienate me,
turn me off?
You already said
You don’t want to talk about it.
Do you realize
you turn people away
you push away
the support you seem to want
you give in
to the mindless delirium
of chant
and expect me
to throw away my mind
and join in.
What I want is action,
clarify the goals
we can agree on
as achievable
and together
go beyond talk
Hey Hey
Ho Ho
Something Something’s
Got to go!
