I notice that the first person singular seems to be my favorite pronoun. I’ve written about that too, and I’ll post it later. But for now I think I’ll include (there it is again, “I”) a brief account of the recent state of things, what (can’t seem to get away from it, “I”) I’m going through.

You Shall Not Pass!

My first big walk
since the operation
the endless steps
up to Coit Tower
every rise and turning
a beautiful surprise
and the photo of me
raising my cane in pose
“You Shall Not Pass!”
echoing Gandalf
on the bridge
against the Balrog
and then I see
the template of my life
in sacrifice to hold back
the overwhelming hordes
and protect the garden
of the future I can now
walk into on my own
