We had a lovely day in Tilden Park the day after July 4. Our good friend, Mike Wright of Dunsmuir, California, came down by train to visit us and explore the park with us. Kristina shot the videos and photos and put together this fun movie for us to enjoy. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Here’s a bit more information about this wonderful carousel:

The Tilden Park Merry-Go-Round is a menagerie carousel located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley. It was built in 1911, and is one of only a handful of true antique carousels left in the United States.

This particular carousel last operated at Griffith Park in Los Angeles in the 1930s before being relocated to its current location. While extensive restoration has been done over the years, the original 1911 Westinghouse 7 1/2 HP electric motor still drives the carousel, and control is done via a trolley car throttle and manual handbrake system.

Music for the carousel is provided by a Wurlitzer music organ player and North Tonawanda 950 organ. There is a very nice café onsite serving Fenton’s ice cream (a local favorite) and other treats, there are restrooms, and picnic tables, and plenty of other nearby park attractions to keep an active family happy for a full day in the park.
