Loading up the worn and old backpack before heading out

Kicked Out

I just got kicked out by the landlord for non-payment of back rent.

I mean, come on, man! I work three jobs, I hardly eat, I sleep standing up.

“You owe me money. There’s a line of people waiting for your place. You have ten minutes to vacate.”

He looked at his watch. “Make that five.” He watched the big hand and started counting. “Clear out your stuff. There’s the door.”

I know where the door is, when it’s open, when it’s not. And my stuff? I’ve downsized to a backpack. I picked it up and walked out the door.

The door slammed and locked behind me.

I walked past the line of replacement hopefuls waiting.

I was out on the street.

I looked right and left, up and down. Where?

I started walking in any direction. My backpack was light with what was left from my life.

I looked into empty doorways of closed businesses. I looked down alleyways.

I looked everywhere and anywhere and nowhere.

I raised my arms to the sky and yelled, “Why?”

The sky didn’t answer.
