Gary Sterling gazes into the mirror, eyebrow slightly raised

Brief Encounter

We met in the book section
I was sitting
on a stool by the lower shelves
blocking the aisle
when he came around the corner
and I stood
to give him room
he said, “Don’t get up
on my account
I hate to interrupt
people when they’re reading”
I said, “Yes
some of us still can read”
we started talking
and talking
it was the excitement
when you find
someone of like mind
the satisfaction of completion
when a circle joins itself
or a period ends a sentence
it seemed we talked
for hours
I threw in some
of my own words
but mostly his
overlapping
“Me too”
we were instant friends
who have more instances
to share we finally
introduced ourselves with names
I tried to remember
talked about lunch maybe later
then the shock of recognition
I was looking in the mirror
talking to myself
