the news depresses me
I need a map
to show me which states to avoid
when trying to get
from here to there
across the country
Canada’s no longer
the easy access route
and Mexico’s too far south
and they have border problems of their own
what’s happened
to the America I love
the Civil War
was never finished
and new dividing rules
spring up every day
I used to think the words we love
equal peace justice democracy
were not too hard to spell
when people still could read
