I’m just a kid,
and I was swimming in the pool.
Not our pool,
because we’re not rich enough to have one,
it’s the neighbor’s pool
and I was wearing water wings
because I’m just a kid.
I had a candy bar
wrapped and stuffed
in my shorts
to eat later
when all of a sudden
a voice from overhead
said,
“You are warned.
You are carrying contraband,
smuggling illegal drugs disguised
as unidentified additives.
Prepare to die.”
I ditched the water wings
and dove for the bottom
as an explosion
rocked the pool
split the concrete
and drained the water.
I stood on the bottom
in the deep end
raised my arms and yelled,
“Why?”
I ate my candy bar,
went in the house
to lie down
and saw myself
on television
as ICE was knocking at my door.
I’m just a kid
with water wings
but you might never
hear from me again.
