Pope Francis as a young man

Out with the Old

Now we’re going to get another Pope.

Transition of Power.

I’ve seen it all before.

Too many times.

The Power that chooses is behind the scenes.

They say it’s not for us to know.

In my brief long life, I’ve seen the rise and fall, hopes come and go.

FDR did so much with the New Deal. He almost made it work, then died, left us Truman whom we forget was President.

After Kennedy, they had to shoot him to stop him, Johnson, LBJ, picked up where FDR left off, gave us the Great Society. Almost. They stopped LBJ with a war.

Then Jimmy Carter came in with down-home enthusiasm. It only took a week for The Power to set him straight. He lasted one term.

Bernie Sanders scared The Power so much they took him off the ballot.

And, like Presidents, the Popes come and go.

The last Pope came in with promise and asked questions. The Power knew that questions lead to answers. If you ask and answer too much, the whole structure collapses.

And here we are again.

But The Power is still scared.

There’s a new wind blowing.

It can sweep away the old, let things grow, the sun can shine, and life can become what it can be.

Pope Francis as a young man, full of questions, and full of love for the world and everyone in it. Let us hope the next Pope is at least as kind and thoughtful as Francis was.
