Young woman at a voting booth

A Call to Non-Action

Hey
Young People
Teens
18 and up
old enough to vote
and ready
if you’ve seen
the progressive political light
and your better future
and you want to vote for it
right away
but your parents don’t
see it like you do
and plan to vote the other side
Don’t do the obvious
like kidnapping their ballots
or pulling the plug
on their tires on election day
so they can’t leave the house
or turn off the alarm clock
so they can’t wake up
before the polls close
No
Don’t do things like that
Talk to them
give them the chance
to try to convince you
and then in fairness
convince them back
promise them anything
to get them to listen
like saying you’ll get your younger
brothers and sisters
to do their chores
or make their bed
so your parents can see you
as an adult with a voice
and a point of view
and if
finally
they agree
with you
on the political basics
and how those younger siblings
who think like you
need their now enlightened parents
to vote on their behalf
then you can drive them
to the polls
and you can all vote
together
as a family
